We aim to instil in all our pupils a love of language and culture. In Years 3 to 5, pupils are introduced to French through games, songs and communication activities, enabling them to enjoy the language as much as possible and piquing their curiosity. Moreover, there are opportunities to explore other cultures and languages in conjunction with the creative curriculum.

In Year 6, pupils enjoy tasters of Spanish and German, spending a term on each language before returning to French in the Summer Term. Pupils then decide which two languages they would like to continue in Key Stage Three, when they spend two lessons each week on each of their chosen languages. As pupils progress, we work hard to ensure that equal emphasis is given to the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, whilst nurturing a solid understanding of grammar concepts.

King’s Ely believes that language learning is key to the sharing of ideas, to mobility across borders and even to the breaking down of ideological barriers. As holders of the International Schools Award, the school has won recognition for its international partnership initiatives, including prizes for the quality of its eTwinning projects. Throughout their time at King’s Ely Prep, pupils will participate in various collaboration projects with partner schools throughout Europe, as well as further afield, using their new language skills in a creative, fun and meaningful way.
