King’s Ely offers a summer language course which is different to others you may find. We want our students to experience a real British boarding school while developing their English language skills in an environment which is academically challenging and fun, and which provides a range of sporting, artistic and cultural highlights among a very diverse international mix of young people.
Courses run for two to four weeks in July. Students live in our beautiful, historic boarding houses, cared for by professional staff. Lessons begin after breakfast and are taught by employees of King’s Ely. We teach a timetable of subjects: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography and Drama, as well as specific English language lessons. All lessons are in the English language, introducing students to vocabulary which will serve them well across a range of scenarios, preparing them not only for speaking and understanding English, but also for future academic study and employment in an English-speaking environment.
From mid-afternoon, students engage in a range of fun activities ranging from sports, music and drama, to collaborative projects like film-making. Our youthful and exuberant activity helpers include many graduates of King’s Ely who are supervised by experienced teachers. Twice a week there are excursions, for instance to Cambridge and London, the nearby Norfolk coast, or to cultural sites in the area. It makes for a packed, fun and enriching experience beyond the classroom.
Our dearest wish is that our Summer School students return to us in future years, or even as full time members of King’s Ely Senior for our full-time academic programmes, and many decide to do so. However, for all those who leave us, we provide a comprehensive report of their progress in English language which they can take back to school in their own country as validation of their effort, learning and experience.
The fees for the 2017 Summer School will be published in the Michaelmas Term.
