At King’s Ely, Mathematics contributes to the school curriculum by developing pupils’ abilities to calculate, solve problems, handle data and reason logically, algebraically and geometrically. Mathematics helps us to understand and change the world. It is also important in everyday living, in many forms of employment and in public decision-making. As a subject in its own right, Mathematics presents frequent opportunities for creativity and can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when a problem is solved for the first time, when a more elegant solution to a problem is discovered, or when hidden connections suddenly manifest.

At Key Stage Two, pupils follow a rigorous curriculum. Mathematics is tailored to the pupils’ needs and is fun, real and varied, with indoor and outdoor projects in all shapes and sizes; from problem-solving with Lego to Cake Bake Fridays. Year 3 is taught in mixed ability, Year 4 is banded into teaching groups, and in Years 5 and 6, pupils are assigned to sets.

At Key Stage Three, the fun aspect of Mathematics continues. However, the students start gearing towards preparation for GCSE. It is important for them to see how Mathematics is used throughout the school and throughout life. With the new GCSE in mind, the students build confidence through tasks and class work. Each pupil has an opportunity to learn best in a style that suits them.
