Every student studies English throughout their time at King’s Ely Prep. We deliver a broad, exciting and challenging curriculum where students develop their knowledge of reading and writing and are given opportunities to develop confidence when speaking in public.
Years 3 and 4 are taught through a creative curriculum, where the texts read are linked to the theme they are investigating. This gives the children a rich source of knowledge and vocabulary, which enhances their writing.
The principle aim of Years 5 and 6 is to expose the children to a wide range of authors, enthusing them with an enjoyment of reading and helping them to gain confidence when expressing their views. We also focus on their understanding of grammar, which allows the children to articulate their ideas clearly. As they grow older, the children study more ambitious texts in detail and are encouraged to write with ever more control and purpose. We also feel it is important to inspire and motivate the children through many author visits, and we encourage them to hone their own skills through writing competitions.
In Years 7 and 8, students are introduced to the art of critical appreciation; learning how to analyse writers’ craft. They develop a deepening awareness of the reader through writing for effect, applying their analytical appreciation of literary techniques. Students learn to express depth of textual study through formal essay skills. A love of reading is developed through a programme of experiencing and sharing a wide range of personal and class reading. Students are also encouraged to develop a critical awareness of the world in which they live through the art of debating and an appreciation of media. All of these skills lead them towards preparation for English Language and English Literature study as they make the transition into their final year of Key Stage 3.
