Music is embedded in the culture of King’s Ely Prep. Two fundamental ideas underpin the operation of the department. Firstly, we provide a very wide range of musical opportunities for pupils of all abilities to enjoy within core lessons and through our plethora of extension and enrichment opportunities. Secondly, recognising and nurturing individual musical excellence is key to the success of this leading area of our school’s life.

At King’s Ely Prep, we ensure that each pupil receives a musical education which encourages creative thinking and teamwork, and most importantly, is an experience that is both fun and rewarding. There is protected time for choir and ensemble rehearsals. Every pupil who plays an orchestral instrument takes part in a group at an appropriate level and there are concerts each term in which pupils can perform.

Whilst the school provides a hotbed of opportunity for the musically gifted and talented, there is something for absolutely everyone, regardless of musical tastes or ability. All pupils experience classroom music as part of the curriculum, and there is an opportunity for everyone to have individual instrumental or singing lessons. Additional support is offered to students preparing to apply for music awards in King’s Ely Senior and pupils of all ages can enter for graded music examinations through the school with both the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity Guildhall.
