Polly to study Music at New College, Oxford

August 2025

Polly will be studying Music at New College, Oxford after achieving the A-Level grades she needed.

Polly joined King's Ely Senior in Year 9 from St John's College School in Cambridge. She studied Music, History, English Literature, and Fine Art at A-Level.

When asked what she plans to do career wise, Polly said: "I am not sure yet, but I hope to do something in Music."

To describe King's in three words, Polly chose "nurturing, enabling, patient".

When asked what she will miss most about King's, Polly said: "I will really miss all of my teachers who supported me. The teachers at King's make a huge effort to tailor their teaching approach to the individual. My teachers were constantly looking out for my wellbeing as much as they were helping me in my subjects. This was particularly the case during the many crunch points in Year 13, such as various UCAS and coursework deadlines. All of my teachers went the extra mile to help me achieve my goals, and I am very grateful to all of them."

Polly is an incredibly accomplished musician and if you have attended a concert or recital here at King's recently, it is very likely that you will have heard her perform. When she was in Year 9, Polly was offered 'joint first study' by the Royal College of Music Junior Department to study both the French Horn and the Recorder, which is extremely rare.

Polly said: "In the Music Department at King's, I was a member of Brass Ensemble, Concert Band, Orchestra, Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir, and I was Music Secretary in Year 13. I was lucky enough to be able to perform the Gliere Horn Concerto with a professional Orchestra in Year 12. I absolutely loved immersing myself in the department."

Polly was appointed a Queen's Scholar and a School Prefect. She was also active in our Drama Department, and says that starring in 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Wendy and Peter Pan' were "huge highlights".

Polly said: "I also loved the History Department at King's. In Year 12, I won the regional heat for 'The Great Debate'. I was also a member of An 'Other' Club, where we discussed the significance of historical events outside the curriculum."

When asked what she thinks makes King's unique compared to other schools, Polly said: "King's entrusts students with a rare degree of freedom in deciding the course of their school journey. This allows students to maintain their individuality, which is often shaved off at other schools. Your years at King's can look however you want them to be. There is no pressure to choose a standard pathway."

Congratulations Polly - enjoy Oxford and keep in touch!
