Tax Relief on Donantions

Donations to charity from individuals are tax free.  You can get tax relief if you donate:

  • Through Gift Aid
  • Straight from your wages or pension, through Payroll Giving
  • Leave charitable donations in your will (reduce inheritance tax)
  • King's Ely are HMRC Registered and can claim back the tax already paid on your donation.
Gift Aid

Donating through Gift Aid means charities and community amateur sports clubs (CASCs) can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give. It does not cost you any extra.

As long as you are a UK taxpayer and sign a Gift Aid declaration, King's Ely is able to reclaim basic rate tax, which currently equates to 25p for every £1 donated.

If you pay tax above the 20% basic rate you can claim back the difference between the tax you have paid on the donation and what the charity got back when you fill in your self-assessment tax return.

Examples

£10,000 Gift
You donate £10,000 to King's Ely - King's Ely claim Gift Aid to make your donation £12,500. You pay 40% tax so you can personally claim back £2500.00 (£12,500 x 20%).

Legacy Giving

Leaving a gift in your Will is an easy way to make a lasting contribution without affecting your current financial needs.

Types of Legacy Gifts

Residuary Legacy
A residuary legacy is a gift of a specific portion or percentage of an estate that remains after all other gifts have been made, such as those to family and friends. This type of legacy is not impacted by inflation, meaning it grows with the value of the estate. Even a small percentage of the residue can make a significant contribution.

Specific Legacy
A specific legacy involves the gift of a particular item, such as fine art or rare books, which can be passed on to the Royal Hospital School. This also includes items that can be sold, with the proceeds supporting the School, like property, land, or shares.

Pecuniary Legacy
A pecuniary legacy is the gift of a fixed sum of money. When making a pecuniary legacy, you can choose to index-link (adjust for inflation) the gift, ensuring it maintains its value over time.

Reversionary Legacy
This type of legacy involves a gift—whether specific, pecuniary, or residuary—that is initially given to another beneficiary. After that beneficiary passes away, the gift then reverts to the Royal Hospital School.

Tax Benefits
Gifts left to charity upon death are exempt from inheritance tax. This exemption applies to all types of assets, including cash. Additionally, if 10% or more of the total estate is left to charity, a reduced inheritance tax rate of 36% will apply.

No specific amount is necessary; we simply ask that you inform us if you plan to leave a legacy gift, so we can express our gratitude and welcome you to the Eliensis Society.

The Eliensis Society will meet each year for a social event, an occasion which enables us to show our appreciation to members during their lifetime. Membership, however, can remain private and a Society list is not published.

We fully respect the wishes of those who choose to not to disclose their intention, and we understand that making a Will is a private and sensitive matter. Please advise us if you wish to remain anonymous.
