About King's Ely

Our History

Educating since 970 AD.

King's Ely can trace its origins from at least 970 AD, making it one of the oldest schools in the country.

The King's School Ely is one of the oldest schools in England. It originated with Saint Ethelwold and Saint Dunstan, who re-founded the monastery of Ely and placed it under Benedictine rule in 970.

Our roots go even further back, to the seventh century AD and Saint Etheldreda's religious community of monks, which also concerned itself with educating the young.

One early pupil was Saint Edward the Confessor. Edward succeeded to the throne in 1042 and went on to found Westsisnster Abby, which was consecrated just one week before his death in 1065.

When Henry VIII closed the monastery of Ely in 1541, he granted the school it's Royal Charter, endowed the first King's Scholars, and granted us the status of King's School. The Royal Charter was reconstituted by Charles II in 1661.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the school was led by Dean Merivale and Headmaster Wakefield (who became famous as the founder of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, which takes place on the river Thames in London every year). Under their management, the school fl and its buildings were considerably modernised and expanded.

After the Second World War, the school absorbed the Cathedral Choir School into its Junior school. In 1970, our Millenary year, King’s Ely became co-educational. When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited the school in 1973, she issued an edict that Queen Scholars should be introduced. The first of them had the honour of being received by Her Majesty during her visit.

King's Ely and Ely Cathedral have been linked throughout their long history. The Headmaster, Scholars and Choristers are members of the Cathedreal Foundation to this day.

Although we cherish our history, schools are about the todays and tomorrows of our pupils, and while we learn from the past, we look to the future.  We are a vibrant community that offers all you would expect of a 21st-century school, and a great deal more.

Today, King's Ely educates around 1,150 boys and girls aged 2 to 18, including around 200 boarders.
