Matthew achieved the A-Level grades that he needed to study History at the University of Warwick.

Matthew joined King's Ely Senior in Year 9 from St John's College School in Cambridge.

Matthew studied History, Politics, and Music for his A-Levels. He is taking a gap year before going to University in 2027. Matthew will be working at St John's as a sports gap student and he hopes to travel during the school holiday periods. 

We caught up with Matthew after he received his A-Level results to find out more about his King's experience and what his next steps are...

Matthew, what career path do you plan on pursuing?

I am hoping to become a lawyer.

What is the quality and style of teaching like at King’s?

The teaching was incredibly specialised to each individual student. Teachers were quick to pick up on anything I was struggling with and were more than happy to take extra time to help me learn and understand a topic. My teachers supported me by giving extra support sessions outside the classroom (i.e. during the holidays), marking work and essays in the lead up to exams, and helping me understand where I went wrong and what I personally needed to improve on in order to achieve the best grades. I had a really close relationship with all my teachers, especially in Sixth Form.

What else did you participate in during your time at King’s?

I participated in a lot of Music, playing the double bass in Orchestra, KESSO, and Spikes, as well as singing and being Head of the King's Barbers, and singing in both Chapel and Chamber Choir. In Sport, I rowed for the first three years I was at King's and then became heavily involved with Hockey. I was also Co-Head of School and a Prefect.

Do you feel that you have been well supported pastorally at King’s?

Yes, I was well supported throughout my time at King’s, especially in the Sixth Form. I had to juggle so many different aspects of school life – A-Levels, being Co-Head of School, Music, and Sport. My teachers and the Sixth Form Team were always there to help me manage my time and make sure I was not becoming too overwhelmed with all the things I was doing.

What will you miss most about King’s and what did you enjoy most during your time here?

I will miss the culture and community that King’s has. There was so much on offer, and I had the opportunity to meet so many different people, experience so many differing things, and create so many memories. I enjoyed Music the most during my time at King’s, as it was something I was so heavily involved with. Music helped me form connections with both students and teachers, and gave me so many memories, such as House Song and playing in concerts.

In what ways do you think King’s is unique or special compared to other schools?

King’s is unique because of its approach to getting the very best out of each student. I found that King's fits the education to the child, not the child to the education.
