Having Ely Cathedral on our doorstep is not only useful for services and concerts, but it also comes in rather handy when you are investigating the history of the Ely area!

Our Year 5 pupils at King’s Ely Prep are currently learning all about ‘Local History’, and when they arrived at the Cathedral on January 22nd, they were greeted by ‘Alice’, a pilgrim who needed their help in deciding whether to visit the Shrine of Edmund or the Shrine of Wendreda.

Through ‘freeze frame’ action, sorting activities, and listening to the stories of both Saints, they unanimously decided that the pilgrimage should be made to March, to see the Shrine of Wendreda.

After this, pupils heard the story of Etheldreda and admired the beautifully embroidered panels, newly installed in St Catherine’s Chapel. The opportunity to dress up went down a storm, and the story was engagingly brought to life for the children and our Year 5 Teachers by the Cathedral’s Volunteer Team!
