Our King's Ely Senior Prizegiving Service is always a terrific way to celebrate our students' epic achievements, endeavours, and contributions to school life!
Around 1,000 pupils, families, staff, governors, Old Eleans, local dignitaries, and friends of King's packed inside Ely Cathedral for the annual event, which took place on May 23rd this year. The service is undoubtedly a highlight of the school's events calendar, with many of our international students' family members travelling to Ely from all corners of the world to witness their children receive prizes.
Academic Prizes and Major Academic Prizes are awarded to students in Years 9, 10, and 11. There are also awards for Most Improved Students and those who have provided an Outstanding Contribution to School Life.
Students in Years 12 and 13 are recognised for academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular areas in which they excel, including Design Engineering, Photography, Mathematics, Fine Art, Rowing, Economics, Spanish, Ely Scheme, and Classical Civilisation, to name just some.
There are also King’s Scholar and Queen’s Scholar Prizes, Prefect Awards, International Scholar Prizes, and Potticary Medals for the Heads of School, which went to Yanki Ertem and Edie Thomson this year.
Prizes and medals which celebrate historical achievements at King’s, such as the Bennett Prize, Merrifield Science Prize, Huntington Trophy, Shepherd Cup, Robinson STEM Prize, and Winkfield Cup are also awarded. Our Chair of Governors, Mr David Day, presented students with their prizes.
Chapel Choir and Brass Ensemble performed Te Deum in B flat by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford impeccably, vocalists Amy Bungard and Charlotte Senior sang a stunning medley from Les Misérables, and cellists Ian Mak and Anna Ost gave an outstanding rendition of Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal. There were also prayers, readings, hymns, and speeches from our Principal, Mr John Attwater, and Head of Senior School, Mr Jonathan Shaw, for whom this year's Prizegiving Service was his last.
Heads of School, Yanki and Edie, spoke about their King's journey with huge fondness and affection. They thanked our Deputy Heads of School, Nell Kittoe and Anna Ost, for their support throughout the year, as well as our superb Prefect Team - Finlay Beeton, Rory Brech, Polly Casey, Allison Chiu, Georgina Dray, Leo Good, Libby Hills, Anya Hjaltun-Rayner, Jack Jeremy, Angie Lai, Samuel Lott, Alexander New, Harriet Petherick, Hettie Robson, Alina Savchuk, Charlotte Senior, Chris Wang, James Warren, and Amalia Wicke.
Edie and Yanki also announced that next year's Heads of School will be Eve Williams and Matthew Chippington. Deputy Heads of School will be Ted Hall and Oynisa Safaeva.
Congratulations to all of this year's prize winners and thank you to everyone who was able to attend the service. Prizegiving was livestreamed by the Cathedral for those who were unable to be there in person. You can watch the service here:
