University of Cambridge Astronomer, Dr Matt Bothwell, visited King’s Ely Acremont Pre-Prep this morning (February 23rd).

Dr Bothwell is a Public Astronomer and Science Communicator, based at the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge and the Kavli Institute for Cosmology, Cambridge.

Our Year 1 pupils are learning all about space and famous astronauts this term in their topic, ‘One Giant Leap’, and they were so excited to hear what fascinating facts Dr Bothwell had to share with them.

They were also eager to share with him what they have been learning over the last few weeks!

Dr Bothwell picked a team of enthusiastic volunteers and gave them his solar system cuddly toys so that the children could order themselves into the sun and the eight planets. He also brought along a real-life asteroid for the children to examine; and he used a netball and tennis ball to demonstrate the distance between the earth and the moon.

Thank you for visiting us Dr Bothwell – it was a wonderful way to complement the children’s learning!
