KING’S Ely rowers had a successful day at the National OarSport Junior Sculling Regatta.

A total of 13 King’s Ely students travelled to Buckinghamshire for the prestigious annual event at Dorney Lake on May 14th. The competition offers races in boat classes that are not on offer at the National Schools Regatta hence it attracts some of the best junior scullers from across the country.

The highlight on the day for King’s Ely was achieved by Rebecca Garrett and Holly Lancaster who came second in the women’s under 15 double scull. Rebecca and Holly won their heat with a well delivered race and went into the final as the second fastest qualifiers. In the A final, they produced a great race to win a Silver medal.

Edmund Dickens and Thomas Oldham also came third in the men’s under 18 double scull. Despite being genuine lightweight rowers and competing against some very strong opposition on the day, the duo went on to win a Bronze medal in the A final.

With arguably the best stretch of river for rowing in the country, it is not surprising that King’s Ely has been a strong force in UK rowing for many years. As one of the major sports available to students from Year 8, rowing is enormously popular with students.

The King’s Ely Boat Club competes at a large number of local and national events throughout the year, including the Schools’ Sculling Head, The Ball Cup, Junior Inter-Regional Regatta, Hampton Head, Pair’s Head, Four’s Head, and many other competitions.
