MORE than 30 King’s Ely Rowers competed in the National Schools Regatta at Eton Dorney.

The competition took place from May 27th-29th and is one of the biggest events of King’s Ely Boat Club’s racing calendar.

Craig Ward, Head of Rowing at King’s Ely, said: “May 27th’s racing for our Year 9 and 10 pupils resulted in some of the most competitive categories we’ve ever seen over the 1,000m TT. Our Year 9 girls’ quad performed very well and have stepped up tremendously in the last two months to finish 25th out of 37 quads. Our two Year 10 girls’ quads overcame the tough conditions to finish 57th and 64th out of 70 crews – a special mention to Anna Ost who coped well racing in her first ever rowing event! The Year 10 boys’ quad have trained hard this year and finished 35th out of 55 crews and learnt a lot through the process.

“May 29th saw our Year 11-13 rowers take to the course, this time through a 1,900m TT then 2,000m finals. The Year 11 boys’ quad have progressed well despite the GCSE exam pressures and came 15th, narrowly missing the semi-finals. The Year 11 girls’ quad have really impressed in the last four weeks and despite missing the semi finals they took 11 seconds off their Scullery Regatta TT time and only missed the semis by 10 seconds! Our Year 13 rowers taking to the course for the last time did themselves proud! The Girls Champ pair of Annie Moore and Mia Gray finished 12th overall and have done well to pick up a new skill in sweep rowing. The Boys Champ double of Conall Comley and Will Buckingham recovered from a poor Time Trial to show some aggression and pick up a 2nd place in the B Final, finishing 8th overall out of 28 crews.

“Well done to all those who competed and we look forward to some fun summer regattas coming up shortly!”
