King’s Ely Boat Club had a brilliant day at the OARSport Junior Sculling Head!

More than forty of our rowers in Years 9-13 competed in the national event at the Eton College Rowing Centre, Dorney Lake, on March 22nd.

Mr Craig Ward, who is Head of Rowing at King’s, said: “Results achieved were arguably the best that we have ever recorded at this event, which has ignited excitement for the summer regattas ahead!

“The day started with our Years 11-13 squads racing in three quads – one J18 boys’ quad and two J18 girls’ quads. The Senior boys of Aron O’Connor, Raphael Bisson, Quentin Mitchell and Yanki Ertem, raced to a respectable finish of 34th place in a competitive category. The Senior girls of Mary Garrod, Mollie Chamberlain, Heather Norris and Elizabeth Boutwood, produced a quality row to finish 20th out of 41 crews in a high quality field. The J16 girls of Tilly Ware, Inga Gutmann, Grace Stonham and Clara Torlesse, raced up in the J18 category and beat several crews who were two years older than them!

“It was then time for the Year 10 pupils to take to the course. The J15 girls’ quad produced a powerful row, overtaking crews on their way down to a top half finish of 27th out of 57 crews. The J15 boys raced in a coxed quad and octo, producing quality rows and finishing 23rd/51st and 14th/19th, respectively.

“Despite it being their first major race, the Year 9 boys produced fantastic results and showed real maturity throughout the day. The boys’ quad recorded an incredible 6th place out of 39 crews, and the octo placed 9th out of 30 crews.

“Well done to all students for a very successful day, and thank you to all coaches and families for their ongoing support.”
