Nigel Amies, Historical Education visited King’s Ely Junior yesterday (February 8th) as our Year 6s are currently learning about Celtic and Roman Britain in their History lessons!

Dressed as a Roman Solider, our reenactor talked to pupils all about life in the Roman period, and how it differed from the preceding Celtic civilisation. The children were able to see reproductions of numerous objects and clothes that were used by the Romans, and they heard about Roman toilets. They were revolted at the thought of using a communal sponge on a stick.

Our reenactor talked about the uniform and equipment of a Roman Legionary, as well as the different weapons that a Soldier would have had. He discussed the Roman invasion of Britain and Boudicca’s revolt against the Romans. He explained who could join the Roman Army and a little about the life that they would have led. Pupils also tried some Roman drill manoeuvres.

What happens in the classroom is only ever part of the story at a school as busy as King’s. We have a uniquely creative and dynamic approach to education, and we strive to extend and enrich our students’ school experience at every opportunity. There are so many trips, visits and opportunities, all of which instil a genuine, lifelong long of learning!
