KING’S Ely rowers enjoyed a great start to 2020 at Star Club Rowing’s New Year Head of the River competition in Bedford on January 12th, with wins in the J16 boy’s single category and the J17 girls’ quad.

Our two Year 10 boy quads performed well, coming 4th and 5th out of 9 in their category, as well as Jess Harding completing the tricky course as a single.

The next division saw our senior girls’ quad of Cherry Brown, Holly Burke, Mia Gray and Annie Moore produce a classy row to win their category by 5 seconds!

The two doubles of Isabella Boutwood and Stephanie Watson and Max Hamberger and Hector MacDonald stormed down the course to record good placings in their field.

Our two Year 9 quads, some of whom were completing their first ever race for King’s Ely, coped well in the worsening wind and beat several other big rowing schools as they raced the shortened course.

The final division of the day saw the Senior rowers heading out in small boats. Will Buckingham was the quickest J16 sculler of the day picking up the win, closely followed by Sam Martin and Conall Comley.

Annie Moore and Mia Gray also picking up a 3rd place finish in the J16 girls double category.

Thanks to James Foster, our Graduate Rowing Coach, for the photos!
