CONGRATULATIONS to King’s Ely student and Ely Cathedral Organ Scholar, Miriam Reveley, who has been Commended in the inaugural Young Organists’ Competition, organised by the School Organists’ Association.

Miriam, who is in Year 13 at King’s Ely Sixth Form, was Commended in the competition’s ‘Advanced Class’.

Miriam said: “In order to prepare for the competition, I needed to film two contrasting pieces. I chose to record Bach’s Prelude in A minor (BWV 543i), which I had recently been practicing for a recital, and the first movement of Mendelssohn’s third Organ Sonata, which I played at the School Music Festival. I was quite nervous about recording my pieces, especially since the deadline was during my A Level exam season, however I was very happy with my performance, and I am thrilled to have been Commended in the competition.”

Earlier this year, Miriam, who joined King’s Ely Senior and Ely Cathedral Choir in Year 9, achieved her Associateship of the Royal College of Organists (ARCO) diploma, something which very few organists achieve while still at school.

** On the subject of organists, we and Ely Cathedral seek to appoint a Graduate Organ Scholar, starting in September this year. **

This is a new, one-year post; extension to a second and final year is possible by mutual agreement. The position has evolved from the previous Assistant Organist to Ely Cathedral Girls’ Choir. The new position offers the opportunity to work with the Music Departments of both King’s Ely and Ely Cathedral, and to be fully involved in helping to implement the exciting new pattern for choristership at the Cathedral.

The closing date for applications is Monday 14th June. Shortlisted candidates will be notified by Wednesday 16th June. Initial interviews may be held remotely. Auditions for shortlisted candidates will be held in person before the end of June.
