KING’S Ely students were on top form in the follow-on round of the Intermediate Maths Challenge.
More than 50 King’s Ely students won awards in the first round of the Intermediate Maths Challenge, held in February. Over 200,000 school pupils from across the UK took part in the competition, which is organised each year by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT), and King’s Ely pupils won an impressive 21 Gold awards, 10 Silver and 25 Bronze prizes.
Year 11 student, Joe Lau, was King’s Ely’s top scorer in the first round and went on to sit the follow-on round of the challenge. He scored in the top 100 and won a Gold medal. On the same day, Year 9 pupil Eleanor MacGillivray sat the Maths Olympiad Paper and she obtained a Distinction with a score that placed her in the top 25% nationally. Year 10 student Thomas Kim also did well in the Maths Olympiad Paper, obtaining a Merit.
Eleven King’s Ely students also sat the Maths Kangaroo Papers, with Year 11 students Christiana Wang and Antonia Ye both receiving Merits in the Pink Kangaroo paper, meaning that they were also in the top 25% nationally.
Year 8 pupil Ben Collier attempted the Maths Kangaroo Paper a year early and achieved a Merit by scoring 107 marks out of the total of 135.
Head of Mathematics at King’s Ely, Audrienne Bezzina, said: “We are all very proud of our students’ achievements. From the original entrants, only one in 400 are invited to take part in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad papers and around 11 in 400 are invited to sit the European Kangaroo papers, so they have all done extremely well.”
In March, King’s Ely students Sam Barber, Eleanor MacGillivray, Ben Collier and George Meyer beat off stiff competition to come second in the UK Team Maths Challenge.
