TALENTED student Rebecca Daniel has been chosen for the England Hockey Under 16 National Age Group Squad (NAGS).
Rebecca (15), a student at King’s Ely Senior, attended the Futures Cup at St Albans during the half term having been chosen to represent the South and East of England Saxon Tigers at Under 16 level.
The Futures Cup involves four days of training and competition between the Saxon Tigers, Pennine Pumas, Wessex Leopards and Mercian Lynx from England, along with the Caledonian Cougars from Scotland and Celtic Jaguars from Wales.
The Saxon Tigers finished second in the contest, losing 4-1 to the Wessex Leopards and beating the Pennine Pumas 6-1. They then played a fiercely fought contest against Scotland, narrowly losing 1-0.
From this tournament, Rebecca, who is from Gazeley, near Newmarket, has been selected for the England Under 16 NAGS and will now attend further training and assessments, starting later this month with a camp at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire.
Head of Girls’ Games at King’s Ely Senior, Chanre Bond, said: “Rebecca’s talent was recognised quite early on at school level. With a lot of hard work, Rebecca has worked her way up through school, county and regional hockey teams to help get her to this stage of her sporting career. Along with playing hockey for King’s Ely 1st team, she also plays national league for Cambridge City Ladies 1s.
“To be selected for the NAGS means that she is currently amongst the top 34 players in the country for her age group. This is a fantastic and very well-deserved achievement for Rebecca. We wish her all the best in the upcoming training camps and selection for England U16.”
