A PHOTOGRAPH by King’s Ely Sixth Form’s student Maria Overtoom has been commended by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and will be display in the Espacio Gallery in London this March.

Maria entered her work into the ESRC’s Focus on Society – a national photographic competition for young people aged 14-18. To enter, students were required to take and submit a photograph showing how they see the world around them from a social science perspective.

The competition received over 900 entries and the judges were delighted with the high standard of the entries.

Antonio Longo, Head of Photography at King’s Ely, said: “The judges said they like that Maria’s image was well-focused and that the subject appeared very natural and unaware they were being photographed. They also liked how the image gave a sense of the commuter being alone while in a crowd.”

The A Level Photography programme at King’s Ely covers a range of photographic traditional and digital techniques, from darkroom, still life, studio lighting, location photography and digital image manipulation. Students undertake personal responses to assignments and develop their photographic ideas and skills to explore their full potential in producing a range of creative work.
