WELL done to all our rowing students for their achievements at Wallingford Rowing Club Regatta and the Junior Sculling Regatta over the Bank Holiday Weekend!

Four of King’s Ely Boat Club’s Year 13 rowers competed in the Wallingford Regatta on May 1st. Will Buckingham and Conall Comley raced as a pair, as did Mia Gray and Annie Moore. All four students gave it their all on the 2,000-metre course against some very fierce competition, and Conall and Will were placed 5th out of 14 doubles, securing a place in the A Final.

The following day (May 2nd), more than 40 of our Year 9-13 rowers travelled to Eton Dorney Lake for the Junior Sculling Regatta, which is arguably the biggest event to race before the National Schools’ Regatta at the end of this month.

Craig Ward, Head of Rowing at King’s Ely, said: “The day started off with a time trial for every crew, with the J18 boys’ double, J16 boys’ quad and J15 boys’ quad winning through to the A, B and C Finals, respectively. This was then backed up by the J15 girls’ quad racing hard to finish in the D Final.

“The Year 9 boys’ octo and Year 9 girls’ quad gained valuable experience before the National Schools’ Regatta by racing on Dorney Lake and seeing the high standard of competition! The Year 10 Girls’ B quad saw Keira Mavin and Charlotte Senior race Dorney for the first time, where they did incredibly well and beat several crews in the time trial!

“The afternoon saw a non-stop train of finals for our King’s crews. Conall and Will (J18 2x), who were completing their 4th 2,000-metre race in less than 48 hours, raced hard to finish 5th, picking up a place on their TT ranking. The J16 boys’ quad came 11th overall, learning a lot in their B Final in the process. The J15 boys came 5th in the C Final, finishing 17th overall and picking up vital skills in race management. Finally, the J15 girls’ boat finished 5th in the D Final (23rd overall) and were motoring at the finish – if only it was a 2,500-metre race!”
