THE eagerly-anticipated British Rowing Junior Championships was King’s Ely Boat Club’s final regatta of the 2022 season.

Twenty-three of our rowers competed in the event at National Water Sports Centre, Nottinghamshire from July 15th-17th.

Craig Ward, Head of Rowing at King’s Ely, said: “July 15th saw our Year 9 and 10 crews racing a 900m time trial, followed by a 1,000m race. Clara Torlesse and Eve Williams impressed, winning a D final, as did Leo Good and Yanki Ertem. Grace Stonham performed well in her single, as did Abigail Biggs. The WJ15 2x of Pippa Giles and Mary Garrod recorded an impressive 12th place in a category of over 40 crews!

“July 16th saw our Year 11-13 rowers competing over a 1,500m time trial, followed by a full 2,000m race. The J16 boys’ and girls’ quads both raced well in the C final, with the boys’ quad of Yanki, Alex Keene, Aron O’Connor and Raphael Bisson winning it to finish 13th overall. Xenia Marshall and Steph Watson both competed in the E final of WJ18 singles, with Xenia so narrowly missing out on the win.

“Year 13 rowers, Conall Comley and Will Buckingham, won through to the July 17th championships 2x and won their B final finishing 7th overall out of 30 crews! The girls’ pair of Mia Gray and Annie Moore raced well, finishing 11th in the champ girls’ pairs.

“A massive well done to all our competitors and a big thank you to Mr Foster and Mr Sellers for going the extra mile after the end of term to make it happen. Thank you also to our Year 13s for everything over the last five years and representing the Boat Club so well. We will miss you!”
