EIGHT of King’s Ely Climbing Club’s newest members could be found working on their Level 1 Climbing Award in Derbyshire at the weekend (September 21st-22nd).

On September 21st, the students enjoyed some fantastic conditions at Windgather Rocks. The group – Thomas Apostolou, Oliver Beard, Ben Collier, Sasha Kaminskiy, Zachary Mendham, Mya Patel, Johnnie Rudd and Moel Tunstall Richards – all started to develop their Level 1 skills whilst belaying members of their team.

Due to poor weather on September 22nd, the climbers spent the morning indoors at The Climbing Unit in Derby. All students were then able to practice the skills learnt throughout the weekend as well as undertaking some bouldering problems.

Director of Outdoor Education at King’s Ely, James Houlston, said: “My thanks to Sophie Cheng, Brett Ffitch and Matilda Scott for their expert tuition and instructing throughout the weekend.

“Under their guidance, Year 12 Pupil Instructor Alex Scarborough also took part in this trip, working as a helper whilst learning fundamental skills in preparation for future national awarding body qualifications.”
