THE final King’s Ely Climbing Club trip of the Lent term took place in Derbyshire at the weekend and was blessed with superb sunshine and clear skies.

A small group of Level 3 climbers took to the sharp end of the rope to traditionally lead climb at Windgather Rocks and Stanage Edge. Despite a busy crag at Windgather, the climbers got on some great routes up to Severe grade.

On Sunday, the classic line of Hollybush was sent by the climbers – an exciting outing on one of the finest gritstone VD lines, with an ascent of the airy Flying Buttress route too.

Director of Outdoor Education at King’s Ely Senior, Sophie Cheng, said: “The fantastic weather meant that the climbers got maximum time on the rock to consolidate their lead climbing, as well as having the opportunity to learn some new skills in advanced anchor set ups and self protected abseiling for emergency retreats. Well done to the climbers – Tom Biggs, Ben Biggs and Henry Rintoul. Thank you also to staff members Brett Ffitch and Joe Watson for all their hard work over the weekend.”
