Our whole school community is deeply saddened by the loss of inspirational and transformative former Headmaster, Mr Hubert Ward OBE.

Mr Ward, who was Head of King’s Ely from 1970 to 1992, died on Easter Sunday, aged 92.

Mr Ward had a huge impact on thousands of students, colleagues and families – and the school itself – during his 22 years as Head. In 1970, girls were admitted for the first time in our 1,000-year history, and his tenure saw the expansion of the school and the development of areas including Hereward Hall, the Barton Farm and Silver Street campuses, and the Hayward Theatre.

We were honoured to welcome Mr Ward and his wife, Judy, back to King’s recently to celebrate 50 years of co-education here. Mr Ward is pictured at the event on the right with our Principal, Mr John Attwater.

There will be an opportunity soon to remember Mr Ward’s life and the huge influence he had on so many members of our school community, past and present. For now, our thoughts and prayers are with Judy, Mr Ward’s children, his wider family, and his many friends.
