Five Minutes With... Ted Hall, Co-Deputy Head of School for 2025-26

September 2025

In which year group did you join King’s?

I joined King's Ely Prep in Year 7.

What A-Level subjects are you studying?

I am studying History, Physical Education (PE), and Spanish.

What is your favourite subject and why?

I would say that PE is my favourite subject, mainly because I can relate what I learn in class to the Sports that I play. This way, I get to understand the theory behind my actions during a game.

What extra-curricular activities are you involved in at King’s?

I am fortunate to be the Boys’ Rugby Captain this year, which I am very excited for. I also like to get involved with various clubs, such as History Café and the Round Table lectures, which are filled with interesting topics and inspiring speakers.

Describe King’s in three words:

Unique, supportive, busy.

What do you think makes King’s a unique place to study?

The people and the endless opportunities. I think that the effort and care that all of the teachers give makes studying at King's so enjoyable. Not to mention the vast range of different activities that students are able to take part in.

Do you board at King’s? If so, what is the boarding experience like here?

I am a flexi-boarder and I have boarded in School House and now Hereward House. Evenings in House are always something that I look forward to. Boarding has given me countless opportunities to make new friends, pursue different interests, and be part of a great community.

How do you feel to have been appointed Co-Deputy Head of School?

I feel really proud and excited. It is a huge honour to be trusted to represent my peers and contribute to the school community. I cannot wait for the year ahead!

What do you hope to achieve in your capacity as Co-Deputy Head of School?

I would say that my main goals are to encourage everyone at school to take advantage of all the different opportunities, and simply put themselves out there.

What are your plans for after Sixth Form? Do you know what career you would like to pursue yet?

Honestly, I have not figured it out yet. I am still exploring University options, but I would like to live and work abroad after school. Hopefully I can put my limited Spanish to good use!

Hobbies/interests outside of school:

I have worked at St Catharine’s College in Cambridge as a server, which has been a great learning experience as it was my first real job! I love pretty much any Sport, especially Rugby and Cricket. In my free time I usually attempt to play the piano, read a book, or just hang out with friends.

What is your favourite meal/food at King’s?

Without a shadow of a doubt the chicken shawarma. It is a must-eat!

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

For my body to never be sore or get injured again, with instant recovery. This way I would feel almost indestructible.

Who is your hero?

Mr Thistlethwaite - for his pink chinos.

What was the last book you read?

'The Name of the Rose' by Umberto Eco.

What song are you most likely to sing at a karaoke?

'Jenna' – Dylan John Thomas.

What is your favourite film?

'The Talented Mr Ripley' (1999).

Do you have any phobias or fears?

Being stuck floating in the middle of the ocean would terrify me! I am not the best swimmer – anyone who went to House Swimming last year would agree.

If you could share a meal with any four individuals, living or dead, who would they be?

Dan Carter, Jacques Kallis, Boris Johnson, and William the Conqueror.

Name three things that you would want with you if you were stranded on a desert island for a week:

A rugby ball, a journal, and some dark chocolate.
