Your full name:

Michelle Bird

Where did you grow up?

Grantham, Lincolnshire.

Education:

I am in my final year of a BSc in Sport, Fitness and Coaching with the Open University (OU). I have applied to AECC University to study an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology in Autumn 2023.

Your previous role and place of work:

I have been a self-employed sports and fitness coach for 11 years. Before that, I worked for OCR and Cambridge International Examinations (Cambridge Assessment) as an Administrative Officer in the examinations department.

What are you enjoying most about your new role and working at King’s Ely?

Supporting students with their sporting aspirations, no matter what their starting point is. I enjoy creating fun and engaging sessions, which show that sport can be enjoyable whilst being meaningful, but most of all, promoting that sport is inclusive of everyone. It is encouraging to work with a school providing access to various sports. I particularly enjoy coaching Strength and Conditioning to our Sports Scholars, and I am looking forward to coaching Athletics in the Summer Term.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A Fashion Designer. I left school and went to Art College, but the career path was not for me.

Hobbies/interests outside of school:

In my spare time, you will find me at a local bike park. I am into downhill, dirt jumps and enduro-style riding, and I sometimes compete in these events too. But generally, it is a great way to get out in the fresh air with friends.

Any pets?

I have no pets because my life is full of activities, but I love animals.

What is your favourite meal/food?

Pizza and yes, pineapple is acceptable as a topping!

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Given my job and a love of lifting weights, it would have to be superhuman strength. I am fascinated by the human body and how strong people have become.

Who is your hero?

My Mum. As a disabled person, she has never let that stop her from achieving. I am super proud, as last year she was voted as Lady Captain for Stoke Rochford Golf Club, and every week she is out playing, socialising and enjoying it.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Building a business from a passion. I am proud of all the barriers and challenges I have overcome and have never given up on my dream.

What was the last book you read?

My library is full of work textbooks! I am a Science nerd, so you will find mainly ‘The Science of…’ on my bookshelf.

What song are you most likely to sing at a karaoke?

I like a duet, so “You’re the one that I want” from Grease would be a classic one for me!

What is your favourite film?

Forrest Gump.

Do you have any phobias or fears?

A fear of height, which is pretty standard!

If you could share a meal with any four individuals, living or dead, who would they be?

Banksy, Brian Cox, Lewis Hamilton and Sarah Millican – art, science, sport and comedy – perfect!

Name three things you would want with you if stranded on a desert island for a week:

Spotify for music and podcasts, a pack of playing cards, and a hammock!
