OLD Elean Aubrey Powell, designer of iconic album covers and images for legendary bands such as Pink Floyd, Genesis, Led Zeppelin and The Who, returns to King’s Ely on Monday June 24 to talk about his work in the music and film industry.

The artist, photographer and film director, also known as Po, will be talking to Senior students about his exciting career working with many popular rock bands of the 1970s and 80s before judging the school’s album cover design competition. The lucky winner will receive a signed copy of Po’s book, For the love of Vinyl, not to mention his implicit endorsement.

Members of the public are also invited to the event, which will feature an unplugged concert by some of King’s Ely’s most talented young musicians.

The event’s organisers include Sixth Form student Will Oliver, who has just been offered an unconditional place to read Musical Theatre at the prestigious Royal Conservatoire of Brussels. Will’s work on the event will help him to achieve the Gold Arts Award certificate – the accreditation designed to help students extend their skills and gain experience of working in the arts sector before continuing their studies.

“I am thrilled that Po is willing to visit his old haunt to encourage our arts students to follow their dreams,” said Adella Charlton, Director of Performance Studies at King’s Ely Senior.

“It seems particularly fitting that Will Oliver, at the start of his career in the arts, should be able to draw on the assistance of such an accomplished artist as Aubrey Powell as part of his Gold Arts Award.”

The talk and unplugged concert will take place in the Hayward Theatre on June 24 from 3pm until 6pm. Tickets cost £10 for adults and students can attend for free. For more information or to purchase tickets, please email boxoffice@kingsely.org or call 01353 653931. Proceeds will be shared between the school’s arts departments and local charities.

Po was a student at King’s in the 1960s. Friends and former classmates have reported that he still drinks his tea from a King’s School Ely mug.
