Around 1,500 members of our school community came together this morning (November 11th) to commemorate Armistice Day.

At King’s Ely Acremont Nursery and Pre-Prep, children and staff paid their respects at an outdoor Remembrance Service in the Acremont Garden. There was a two-minute silence and King’s Ely Junior pupil, Ted Tregoing, played the Last Post and Reveille.

Students and staff at King’s Ely Junior and King’s Ely Senior had their Remembrance Service inside Ely Cathedral. Parents and carers, Old Eleans, governors and friends of the school were invited to the event, which featured hymns, prayers, readings, blessings and the National Anthem.

Moments that were as poignant as ever were when the names of Old Eleans and former choristers who have died in wars since World War One were read out, and when poppies fell down from the Octagon.

Before the service, King’s Ely Brass Ensemble played ‘The Lost Chord’ by Arthur Sullivan. During the service, our Chamber Choir sang ‘For the Fallen’, and Chapel Choir sang ‘Lord, Make me an Instrument’. The service ended with Glen Dempsey playing ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ on the organ.

After the service, poppy wreaths were laid at our recently-refurbished war memorial, which is located near to the Hayward Theatre. Thank you to everyone who contributed to what was an incredibly moving morning!
