King's Ely Senior students complete Silver DofE Practice Expedition in Chiltern Hills

May 2026

Forty-one King's Ely Senior students descended on the Chiltern Hills for their Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) Practice Expedition.

Navigating the rolling hills and dense woodland, the intrepid group of Year 10 pupils experienced a true taste of the great British outdoors, with that all familiar mix of intermittent rain showers and bursts of sunshine.

Mr Tim Wyndham-Smith, our Assistant Director of Outdoor Education and DofE Manager, said: "Despite the physical challenges of demanding climbs, the group maintained excellent morale, supporting one another with encouragement, teamwork, and plenty of laughter. Their strong group dynamic was evident throughout, demonstrating an ability to meet the rigours of the expedition with resilience and positivity.

"The unpredictable weather also provided invaluable “living classroom” experiences. Students quickly discovered the importance of careful waterproofing after a few damp belongings prompted a rethink of packing strategies! They also gained practical skills in preparing meals in less-than-ideal conditions, mastering sheltered outdoor cooking in the rain."

Looking ahead, preparations are now underway for the Assessed Expedition in the Peak District in July. Meeting every Friday, students are carefully planning their routes and building on the lessons learned in the Chiltern Hills. With growing confidence and resilience, they are ready to exchange gentle slopes for more rugged terrain, well equipped for the challenge ahead!
