Will you be watching ‘Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?’ on ITV this evening (Monday April 10th)?

If so, look out for King’s Ely Senior student, Alfie Bottley, who will feature in the opening scenes alongside The Choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge.

Alfie was in Year 8 and was a member of The Choristers of Ely Cathedral Choir when he was invited to record a solo piece for the three-part adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel. The opportunity came about in 2021 through Sarah MacDonald, Fellow and Director of Music at Selwyn College Cambridge and Director of Ely Cathedral Girl Choristers. Writer and Director of ‘Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?’, Hugh Laurie, wanted a boy soloist for the programme, and Sarah put Alfie forward.

Speaking about the experience, Alfie, who now sings as a bass (!), said: “I really enjoyed recording the vocals with Hugh Laurie. It was challenging to sing the song in Welsh, but they had it phonetically translated for me. The Selwyn College Choir were amazing and filming on set was a really cool experience, even though there were still lots of Covid restrictions. I would like to thank Sarah MacDonald for putting me forward for it.”

Tonight’s episode is on ITV One at 9pm. The final episode is tomorrow (Tuesday April 11th) at the same time!
