“This Sunday, the Cambridge Half Marathon takes place with a number of King’s Ely teaching and support staff taking part. The race itself will be used by many participants as preparation for the upcoming London Marathon in April, to gauge the effectiveness of their training to date. Runners will learn a lot about planning, kit, nutrition, and pacing. In running, I have learnt far more from races when things have gone wrong in terms of pace or preparation. These experiences have ensured that I have been better prepared for the next one.

“This process is not dissimilar to mock exams providing preparation for the ‘real thing’ in the summer. The Year 13s completed their trial examinations this week, ahead of their A Levels in May and June. I hope, that for most, the experience will provide reassurance that they are on the right tracks. However, for some it may be a reality check of the work that needs to be done in the coming weeks. Our response to setbacks in training is often a reflection on our character. Can we dust ourselves off and learn from the experience or do we carry on as before, ignoring the lessons learnt in the hope that all will be OK? Learning from setbacks is relevant in every aspect of life and we will certainly be encouraging Year 13s to reflect on their ‘Cambridge Half Marathon’ as they prepare for their ‘London Marathon’ in the summer.

“On a different note, I am delighted to announce that Alex Meddle has been appointed as the KES Director of Sport on a permanent basis. This followed a rigorous recruitment and interview process. We look forward to seeing the continued development of sport under his leadership.

“With best wishes.”
