“HAPPY New Year. It has been a delight to welcome everyone back to school this week.

“In the Cathedral this morning, we reflected upon the life of Archbishop Desmond Tutu who died, age 90, on Boxing Day. He was a remarkable man who campaigned tirelessly against injustice, both in South Africa in the fight against apartheid but also globally.

“As a reluctant runner, I was particularly impressed to read how he would get up at 4.30am for his early morning jog, in his episcopal purple tracksuit, followed by meditation and prayer. It made me feel decidedly lazy by comparison.

“Following his death, tributes arrived from across the world. These included the Queen, the Pope, the Dalai Lama and Barack Obama. However, my favourite tribute was the reflection by UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, that Archbishop Tutu was an “unwavering voice for the voiceless”.

“With my best wishes.”
