“Whatever your politics, it is very easy to admire the leadership of Jacinda Ardern, who announced that she was stepping down at the next election in October. In 2017, she became New Zealand’s youngest Prime Minister at the age of 37. She has led New Zealand through a terrorist attack, a natural disaster and a global pandemic.

“In her announcement yesterday, she listed her government’s achievements on climate change, social housing and reducing child poverty, as ones of which she was particularly proud. However, she said she hoped her legacy in New Zealand would be “as someone who always tried to be kind. I hope I leave New Zealanders with a belief that you can be kind but strong, empathetic but decisive, optimistic but focused.”

“Kindness and empathy are qualities that we endeavour to inculcate in the King’s community, and I hope they are at the heart of both staff and pupil leadership. Role models such as Jacinda Ardern are a breath of fresh air.

“With my best wishes for the weekend.”
