KING’S Ely Junior students William Daniel and Barnaby Whittome represented their respective counties in the Under 13’s Inter-counties Hockey Tournament.

The tournament, held on April 29th, saw William representing Suffolk and Barnaby representing Cambridgeshire. Both Barnaby and William are Year 8 pupils.

Suffolk got off to a slow start, losing their opening match against Bedfordshire. However this proved to be a wake-up call and they followed it up with three fantastic performances with victories over Norfolk, Essex and Hertfordshire. Meanwhile Cambridgeshire started very positively and also played some high quality and skillful hockey, gaining victories over Norfolk, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and a score-draw against Essex.

An intriguing final match saw Suffolk playing Cambridgeshire in the gold medal game. It was a closely fought encounter and a highly skillful and tense match with both William and Barnaby turning in fine performances. Suffolk managed victory by three goals to two, with the winner coming in the final minute. This resulted in Suffolk winning Gold and Cambridgeshire receiving the Silver medal.

Director of Sport at King’s Ely, Jim Thompson, said: “Well done to both boys in representing their counties and playing with such skill and determination.”
