Students reap the benefits of regular debating opportunities here at King’s – and not just in Senior or Sixth Form.

At King’s Ely Prep, Miss Carly Collins’ Year 6 English group recently took part in a debate, to tie in with their studies of the best-selling children’s novel, ‘The Shark Caller’ by Zillah Bethell.

The motion was: ‘Islands should be encouraged to keep their traditions and should not be changed by visitors or newcomers’.

Pupils worked so hard to prepare for the debate and, as such, their opening speeches, arguments, and supporting evidence were all so strong. Mrs Rachel Axten-Higgs was the adjudicator and she brought her English group along to support the teams and contribute to the calls of “Hear! Hear!”

Miss Collins said: “Both teams argued their cases exceptionally well, and the pupils’ confidence really grew as the debate progressed. It looks like there may well be some children with promising careers in roles involving public speaking! In the end, with votes of 10-6, the proposing team won. Congratulations to everyone involved!”
