KING’S Ely’s Junior Debating Finalists went head-to-head in the Hayward Theatre on Friday 29th, arguing the motion: ‘This house believes that the existence of evil provides conclusive proof that God does not exist’.

The debaters from School House (Jamie Layfield, Oakley Carr and Freddie Bowles) and Withburga House (Emma Garrett, Audrey Raynes and Tessa Hawes) put up a tense struggle in their arguments between one another, providing the watching Year 9 and 10 students with much entertainment and opportunities for deep thinking.

There were some excellent examples of Points of Information, with some good rebuttals from both teams. The boys opposing the motion made some excellent links to the Book of Jobe in their arguments, whilst the proposing members of Withburga engaged the audience through their use of emotive, personal stories, questioning how good and evil can go hand-in-hand.

However, after much deliberation, our visiting adjudicator, Edmund Aldhouse, from Ely Cathedral, came to a conclusion alongside Mr Kittoe and Ms Watkins. It was Withburga who won the competition for a second year in a row, securing their possession of the prestigious Junior Debating Cup once more!
