Our Under 16As had a fantastic time at Ipswich School’s Rugby 7s Tournament on February 12th – and they made the Finals!

Grit, some superb Rugby, and heaps of team spirit, resulted in the boys taking on Woodlands School, Basildon in the Plate Final. They missed out on the win by one score.

Michael Batty, Head of Rugby at King’s Ely Senior, attended the Sunday tournament with the boys and James Foster.

Mr Batty said: “The boys played brilliantly, and they should all be proud of how well they did. The tournament was a really enjoyable event, and it provided the boys with valuable experiences in preparation for the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens Tournament in March.

“At Ipswich School, the boys’ first game was against Leicester Grammar School, and they won 36-14. Next up, it was Samuel Whitbread Academy, a school with a very successful Rugby programme. King’s were leading until the last play, when the opposition scored and converted to win 26-24.

“Lightning is not supposed to strike twice but it did against King’s, as the hosts, Ipswich, scored a last minute try against the boys, winning 19-14. The final group game was against New Hall School, who looked strong all day. King’s knew they needed a big win to qualify and that they did, running out 45-0 winners, thanks to some outstanding Rugby by the whole team.

“On to the Plate Semi-Final, where the boys started slowly against Bishop’s Stortford College, but fought back to win 33-17. The Final was played against Woodlands School, Basildon. This was a tense encounter, with both sides playing some great Rugby 7s, but it was the opposition who came out on top, winning by one score, 24-17.”

Huge well done chaps – roll on the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens!
