HUGE congratulations to Old Elean, Rebecca Daniel, who has not only received her first international cap for Hockey Wales, but will also be playing the sport she loves at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games!

Rebecca, 21, and who is from the Newmarket area, has been selected for the Hockey Wales Women’s Team after impressing coaches at the Women’s Junior World Cup in South Africa.

On July 16th, Rebecca also played for Hockey Wales Women against South Africa. Wales beat South Africa for the first time since 1920 with a 1-0 victory. The match marked Rebecca’s senior international debut.

Rebecca left King’s Ely Sixth Form in 2018/19 and went on to study Sports Science at Durham University.

Speaking about receiving her first international cap, she said: “It was such a memorable day getting my first international cap for Wales. Playing at home in Cardiff in front of friends and family was amazing! It was a great experience playing against South Africa and even better to get a win in the first game of the series. Overall, the matches were great preparation for the Commonwealth Games.”

Rebecca is one of just 36 athletes chosen to represent Hockey Wales at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games – 18 players for the Women’s Squad and 18 players for the Men’s Squad. Olympic bronze-medallist Leah Wilkinson will captain the women’s side.

The Birmingham Commonwealth Games kick off on July 28th. To find out more, visit: www.birmingham2022.com
