Congratulations to Old Elean, Charlie Watson, who has released his debut single!

Charlie, 21, is a former member of the Choristers of Ely Cathedral Choir and he is now in his final year at BIMM Institute in London. Charlie attended King’s from Nursery right the way through to Year 13.

His single, entitled ‘2052’, was released today (October 27th) and it is available to listen to on all major platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.

‘2052’ explores a pessimistic view of modern day life, subtly hinting at recent crises and events. With powerful drums and driving bass combined with Charlie’s emotive vocals and thought provoking lyrics, the song is sure to draw attention.

Charlie said: “Generally, I am a happy, positive guy but sometimes I do get very pessimistic about the world we live in. Writing this song was a way for me to express those feelings that a lot of people my age tend to get into a spiral about. I hope this song provides some sort of cathartic comfort to anyone who listens to it.”

As well as being a Chorister, Charlie, who is from Ely, took full advantage of extra-curricular opportunities at King’s, including being Head of our boys’ a cappella group, The King’s Barbers, and Head of our outdoor education programme, Ely Scheme.

Charlie, whose degree is a Joint Honours in Songwriting and Music Production, said: “I was heavily involved in the extra-curricular side of life at King’s. Touring Goa with The King’s Barbers, going on an expedition in the Picos de Europa, and giving Health and Safety a scare during a synchronised backflip off the car in ‘Grease’ are among some key highlights! I played Kenickie in ‘Grease’ and Jesus in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’.

“I was at King’s for my entire school life, so I think it is fair to say that the environment it created, the opportunities that were on offer, and the friends and staff with whom I interacted with, play a considerable part in who I am today.”

After leaving King’s, Charlie had a gap year, during which he went mountaineering in Nepal. He then lived in Vancouver as a climbing instructor before the pandemic struck. Charlie started at BIMM London in September 2020 and he is due to graduate next summer.
