BOYS currently in the Year 2 to Year 4 age group who enjoy singing are being offered the opportunity to discover what life is like as an Ely Cathedral Boy Chorister. Interested parents are warmly invited to sign up for the next Be a Chorister for a Day event, to be held on Saturday February 6, organised by Ely Cathedral and King’s Ely. There is no charge for this exciting event.

Alongside daily rehearsals and services, Ely Cathedral Boys’ Choir enjoys an exciting schedule of concerts, broadcasts, foreign tours and recordings. In recent years the choristers have worked with many well-known artists and orchestras, including Gareth Malone, Aled Jones, James Bowman, Jose Carreras, Britten Sinfonia and The City of London Symphony Orchestra – to name but a few.

The 22 boy choristers are in Years 3 to 8 in King’s Ely Junior. There is no boarding requirement for Junior probationers in Year 3, and the schedule for these youngest boys is specially devised to gradually introduce them to choir routine. Probationers continue into Year 4 when the boys are free at weekends until they become full choristers.

Full choristers benefit from a very flexible approach to boarding in Choir House which enables them to go home on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings if they wish. In a normal week, choristers are also free until 3pm on Saturdays. Great care is taken to achieve a healthy balance between the general education of a chorister and his singing commitments.

Director of Music at Ely Cathedral, Paul Trepte, said: “Being a chorister with Ely Cathedral and King’s Ely is something very special. We offer an experience that will stay with them through life and, for some, it can be the beginning of a successful and fulfilling musical career.”
