KING’S Ely students were on top form at MathsFest at Cromwell Community College on February 3rd.

17 teams of pupils from across the region competed, with eight King’s Ely Senior students making up two teams. Our mathematicians were William Biggs, Elliot Bord, Ben Collier, Joe Coppin, Ayala Gate, Freddie Hills, Jonny Iles and Daniel Millard.

Both teams did brilliantly, with the team of Elliot, Ben, Joe and Ayala being crowned the overall winners!

Audrienne Bezzina, Head of Mathematics at King’s Ely Senior, said: “The challenge was made up of four rounds. In the first round, the Merry-G-Round, the whole team were given problems to solve within a 15-minute time period. The students worked individually and then together as a team to come up with the correct answers.

“The students then had six harder problems to solve together as a team for round two. In round three, the students learnt some linear programming and were given some questions to solve. Finally, the students had the shuttle, which consisted of four rounds. Within each round there were four questions and the answer to each of them was required to work out the solution to the next.

“Both our teams did incredibly well, with the team consisting of Elliot, Ben, Joe and Ayala winning all rounds and the overall competition from a field of 17.

“All of our students worked really well as a team, which definitely helped them solve some of the more challenging and abstract problems that required more out-of-the-box thinking. Well done Team King’s Ely!”
