KING’S Ely’s 1st XI football team have been crowned Mercian League Champions for the first time in school history.

The squad sealed the Mercian Under 18 Football League title on Saturday, March 18th with a 2-1 win over Uppingham School, who were also in with a chance of winning the league. King’s Ely’s goal scorers were Eamon Hatoum and Louis Garrett, both 18.

King’s Ely remained unbeaten in the league, winning five of their matches against Oundle, Wellingborough, Stowe, Oakham and Uppingham. The other match was a goalless draw against Bedford. In total, King’s Ely players scored 12 goals and conceded only 3 goals from the six matches.

Head of Physical Education at King’s Ely Senior, Kevin Daniel, is understandably proud of the team. He commented: “Everyone is thrilled for the 1st XI team as their league win is thoroughly deserved. Success was due to our well organised defensive play with a quick press, which stifled the opposition. We were also supported by an outstanding mid-field trio who countered quickly, playing some very attractive free-flowing football.”
