KING’S Ely Sixth Form student and avid sailor, Johnnie Rudd, took on The Three Rivers Race in Norfolk during half term.

The event is a 24-hour sailing endurance race held on the Norfolk Broads. The full race is 50 miles and it includes three different rivers and three bridges, hence its name. It is one of the toughest and biggest inland sailing races in Europe, hosted by Horning Sailing Club.

Johnnie, who is in Year 12 and who is a member of the Norfolk Broads Yacht Club, took on the challenge with three of his friends – Beowulf, Cecilia and Natalie. Their boat was a Yare and Bure One Design vessel, which is a classic Norfolk sailing boat.

Due to the wind dropping and the tide being against them, Johnnie and his friends unfortunately had to retire from the race after around 19 hours. He said: “Despite this, we all had great fun and I will definitely continue to do this race in years to come.”
