EIGHT Year 12 students travelled to the Brecon Beacons just inside the Welsh border to undertake their Gold Practice Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award Expedition.

An initial two days of training around Bwlch were followed by a four-day circular expedition through and around the Black Mountains. The weather varied enormously throughout the trip, from brief moments of sunshine to heavy rain and even snow at times.

Assistant Director of Outdoor Education at King’s Ely Senior, Martin Bray, said: “Route finding was tricky at the best of times, with blocked paths and thick cloud cover. The groups showed great perseverance in dealing with the conditions, adjusting routes and the constant battle of trying to dry equipment out.

“All eight made it successfully to the finish point on day four and will now prepare to return to Brecon in August to complete their Assessed Expedition.”
