KING’S Ely rowers were victorious at the Ball Cup Sprint Regatta in London.
A total of 28 King’s Ely Senior and King’s Ely Junior students travelled to the Olympic rowing course to compete in the prestigious competition on May 7th.
Alice Dickens won a Gold medal in the women’s under 16 single scull and set a new course record, as did Georgia Chapman who won Gold in the women’s under 14 single scull.
Tallulah Cox won a Bronze medal in the women’s under 15 single scull and went on to repeat this result in winning Bronze in the women’s under 15 double sculls with her rowing partner Imogen Kirkpatrick.
The King’s Ely Junior boys’ coxed quad of Isaac (cox), Isaac Berraondo, Finlay Boyle, Conall Comley and Edward Moss also won Bronze and the King’s Ely Junior girls’ coxed quad of Isaac Berraondo (cox), Annie Moore, Otilia Salgado, Indra Salgado and Charlotte Ellis placed third in their heat, narrowly missing out on making the A final. It was an impressive row as it was the Salgado twins’ fourth time ever in a rowing boat.
With arguably the best stretch of river for rowing in the country, it is not surprising that King’s Ely has been a strong force in UK rowing for many years. As one of the major sports available to students from Year 8, rowing is enormously popular with students.
The King’s Ely Boat Club competes at a large number of local and national events throughout the year, including the National Schools’ Regatta, Schools’ Sculling Head, The Ball Cup, Junior Inter-Regional Regatta, Hampton Head, Pair’s Head, Four’s Head, and many other competitions.
