Storm Babet failed to dampen spirits at our ‘Race for Life’ event at King’s Ely Prep!

Yes, pupils and staff got thoroughly drenched, but in true King’s fashion, the fundraiser went ahead, Eleans took on the course with smiles on their faces (mostly!), and family members grabbed their brollies and turned out to support their children as they ran, skipped, walked and jumped around the astro.

The fabulous fundraiser took place on October 20th to raise money and awareness for King’s Ely Prep’s two charities this year – Cancer Research UK and GIST Cancer UK. The children’s sponsorship money is still coming in, but we know that at least £550 was raised for the two charities on the day alone!

Mr Whymark, Head of King’s Ely Prep, said: “Nothing was going to stand in the way of the children completing their Race for Life! Thank you to everyone who braved the very wet weather and came along to support the Prep community’s efforts on behalf of Cancer Research UK and Gist Cancer UK. We look forward to seeing how much the children’s efforts have raised when we return from the break and gather the funds together.”

Gill Burgess, Relationship Manager for Cancer Research UK in East Anglia, was able to join us on the day too, which was fantastic. Gill spoke at our Cathedral Service in the morning, which was led by Prep students and staff. Gill talked about the hope that there is for better treatments and outcomes in the future, especially so thanks to people’s fundraising and donations.

King’s Voices (Prep) and Chamber Choir (Senior) sang ‘All will be Well’, which was commissioned by Cancer Research UK in 2018, and composed by Will Todd. In the afternoon, Gill then helped out at our Race for Life event; handing out medals to the children, selling charity merchandise, etc.

Congratulations to every single Year 3-8 pupil who participated, to all staff who helped to ensure the event ran smoothly, to all families who were able to support the children on the day and/or with sponsorship, and to Gill for taking time out of her busy schedule to be with us!
