Our annual ‘Year 9 Stage Camp’ at the start of the Michaelmas Term is a fantastic way for our youngest Senior students to make new friends, get to know their tutors, and enjoy a flavour of what our unique outdoor education programme, Ely Scheme, is all about.

More than 120 Year 9 pupils, an 18-strong team of Pupil Instructors, and lots of tutors and staff took part in this year’s Stage Camp, which was held at Bradfield Park Scout Camp Site, near Bury St Edmunds, on Thursday and Friday, September 7th and 8th.

James Houlston, our Director of Outdoor Education, said: “Everyone coped extremely well in the hot and humid conditions that we had. Throughout the two days, students undertook teambuilding tasks within their tutor groups, and completed a 9-kilometre walk with their tutor group and tutor. On Thursday evening, the Year 9s cooked their own evening meal on trangias, which consisted of pasta and a tomato based sauce. Many commented that the food tasted fantastic as they had cooked it themselves! After their meal, students played one of the Instructors’ favourite games – ‘Hunt the Instructor’, followed by the ‘glow stick game’. Towards the end of the evening, Year 9s and Instructors went off to their camp areas within Houses, and spent time with their Housemasters and Housemistresses, making camp fires and toasting marshmallows.

“Pupil Instructors led all of the activities, and even though this was the first time that some of them had instructed, they were all enthusiastic, caring, and supportive of the Year 9s. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff who helped out over the two days, and of course the Year 9s and Pupil Instructors, who made it an extremely enjoyable Stage Camp.”

Ely Scheme offers boundless opportunities for pupils in Years 9-13 to explore and learn through outdoor education. Our unique programme is facilitated by specially selected and trained Pupil Instructors, who deliver our activities and learn to become exceptional leaders.
