TEN King’s Ely pupils have been officially installed as Ely Cathedral choristers.

The sweet-sounding choristers – six girls and four boys – were installed during Sunday Evensong at the cathedral on March 26th. The newest girl choristers are Megan La Manna, Stella Bluck, Miriam Reveley, Grace Owen, Amelia Merrick and Katherine Mann. The newest boy choristers are Robert Reed, Max Hatton, Alfie Bottley and Nelson Cuthbert-Jacques.

Director of Ely Cathedral Girls’ Choir, Sarah Macdonald, commented: “We are delighted to welcome the girls and boys into the cathedral foundation. They have all spent the past several months learning the many new skills required of a chorister, working hard to master such things as the technical vagaries of psalm-singing, coming to terms with new and busy daily routines, building their musicianship and teamwork skills, and finding their feet in everything from polyphony to processions. The service was lovely and the cake was absolutely incredible!”

Assistant Organist and Acting Director of Music at Ely Cathedral, Edmund Aldhouse, added: “Choristers at Ely Cathedral are young professionals and, as with any new job, there is much to learn! All boys and girls undergo a probationary period while they get to grips with musical and vocal skills, as well as mastering the considerable discipline that a cathedral chorister needs to have. At the end of their second term they receive a medallion and are official installed as cathedral choristers. This is a very special event for them and their families. We are still looking for enthusiastic young singers to join our new recruits and we are always glad to hear from boys and girls with a love of music.”
